Formed in 2010, with its name taken from Richard Strauss' composition Metamorphosen, this Berlin-based string orchestra was co-founded by cellist and conductor Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and violinist and concertmaster Indira Koch. Members include gifted chamber musicians and orchestral players from across Germany, as well as winners of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the International Lutoslawski Competition in Warsaw, and the International Music Competition in Bayreuth. The orchestra has toured Germany, Spain, and Switzerland, and has become the orchestra-in-residence at the International Music Festival in Goslar. In addition to playing standard string ensemble repertoire, Metamorphosen Berlin has also commissioned new works, such as the Concertino by Helmut Abel. The group has recorded for Sony Classical.
