Chicago natives Mental Insect grew from a studio-only noise experiment to a full-blown band in a ten-year period. Starting first with knob-twiddler Frank Zibel and guitarist Jim Glass, the first half of the '90s was spent only producing music at home with no live outlet. In June 1997, the two men decided to start rehearsing for a live show, starting with a drum machine but eventually realizing they needed a real drummer. Discovering Nate Wiencken at the tail end of 1999, they hired him on as their drummer and released Live at the Big Horse Lounge after a successful performance.
