Malombo is the longest-lasting group in South Africa. Formed in the early '60s as the Malombo Jazz Men, Malombo continues to explore the possibilities of fusing the musical traditions of South Africa with the improvisation of jazz. While the group initially centered around flute player Abe Cindi and percussionist Julian Bahula, they experienced a major change with the addition of guitarist Dr. Philip Nchipi Tabane. Under Tabane's leadership, Malombo became a breeding ground for great musicians and singers, introducing Mabe Thobejane, Raymond Motau, Oupa Monareng, Gabriel Thobehane, and Beki Mseleku.
