Formed in 2000 in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood by friends and music obsessives Dan Barone and Susannah Bailis, Lorelei started with a radically unconventional instrumental approach (two basses, period), added a drummer in Thad Kellstadt, and became a rock band. The three started gigging in early winter 2001, and by June of that year had recorded their debut EP. It was a tight, sexy, breathless affair, with Bailis and Barone switching off on high-low bass and lead vocals, Bailis' staccato affectation betraying her admiration for the Pacific Northwest's Kill Rock Stars stable of bands, with Barone's sweet, soulful voice an effective contrast. It was good enough to get the band on a Kill Rock Stars compilation. Our Minds Have Been Electrified followed in late 2002.
