During the mid- to late '80s he began to score hit singles such as "Love's Refuge" (1986) and "One Step at a Time" (1987), and his xinyao (i.e., Singaporean Chinese folk song) phase from 1986-1992 proved particularly influential and garnered considerable acclaim.
