The brainchild of producer Imanol Ortiz (who was responsible for the similarly themed Latin Grammy-nominated tribute to Joan Manuel Serrat), La Habana Canta a Sabina is a collective of established Cuban musicians who came together to pay homage to influential Spanish singer/songwriter and poet Joaquín Sabina. Recorded in Havana, the impressive array of vocalists' 2011 self-titled tribute includes ten cover versions of Sabina's best-loved songs from the likes of Nuevo Trova Cubana founders Pablo Milanés ("Uno Cancion Para la Magdalena") and Amaury Pérez ("A la Sombra de un Leon"), Guantanamo duo Buena Fe ("La Cancion Mas Hermosa del Mundo"), Buena Vista Social Club singer Carlos Kalunga ("Quien Me Ha Robado el Mes de Abril"), salsa vocalist Ivette Cepeda ("Como un Dolor de Muelas"), and composer Frank Fernandez ("19 Dias y 500 Noches").
