Placing Carnatic vocalists in alphabetical order results in a quirk of fate. Jon Higgins (1939-1984) was an unusual character. Unlike most Westerners who dabble in the music of other cultures, he immersed himself in Carnatic music to the extent that he was able to win a reputation as a Carnatic vocalist. His skills and achievements were enough to place him on an equal footing with Indian-born musicians. He also was an academic and held various posts. Higgins' work is testimony to his role as bridge builder between two cultures.
