John McDuffy spent the mid-1960's playing in a New York blues-rock band called the Kingbees (whose line-up also included future James Taylor and Carole King guitarist Danny Kortchmar) without attracting too much notice, when he was suddenly plucked from obscurity and offered the chance to join the Blues Project. He joined just in time to participate in the Monterey International Pop Festival -- and, alas, to see the band partly shown up musically by the man whose spot he filled, Al Kooper, at the festival. The band did perform McDuffy's "Lost In The Shuffle", which also turned up on their next single, but their days were clearly numbered, and by 1968 he had disappeared from the world of recorded music.
