While there seems to be a Jim Reynolds for every instrument in the orchestra, developments are slack -- both predictably and literally -- when it comes to the trombone. According to discographical records, trombonist Jim Reynolds performed on a single recording session in 1943 -- for, of all people, bandleader Freddie Slack. This is the spot for a drum roll or whatever noise a trombonist might make to indicate the presence of a punchline. Other members of Slack outfits included drummer Nick Fatool, trumpeter Neal Hefti, and trombonist Jimmy Knepper.
