Guitarist and koto improviser Jason Stanyek became active in the U.S. West Coast new music scene in the mid-'90s. The composer and writer was a doctoral candidate at U.C., San Diego, even while busy in a quartet with fellow U.C.S.D. graduates clarinetist Pat O'Keefe, trumpeter Glen Whitehead, and bassist/prepared pianist Scott Walton, a group that has gone under the names QQ and Scott Walton Quartet. Three years after the quartet's formation, they released the album Unbalancing Act on Vinny Golia's label, 9 Winds. With the quartet, Stanyek has collaborated with such renowned jazz musicians as Wadada Leo Smith and George Lewis, in addition to dance and performance artists and in theater and film projects. Jason Stanyek has also written articles for a variety of music magazines and papers for music symposiums.
