This short-lived Mansfield, England-based indie rock outfit was formed in the early 90s by Richard Warren (guitar/vocals), Richard Sheldon (bass), and Louis Devito (drums). After slogging around the local pub circuit for several years, the trio’s fiery live performances finally attracted the notice of the UK music press. Their first national release was June 1997’s Take You Down EP, which featured the blistering live favourite ‘The Only Ones’. Unfairly dismissed as hopelessly retro in the post-Britpop musical environment, the band’s 1998 debut nevertheless contained moments of pure garage rock nirvana fuelled by Warren’s lyrics of small-town entrapment and thwarted dreams. It was to be the only Hybirds release, with Warren going on to release more experimental material under the Echoboy moniker.
