Boston's alt-pop group Hummer consists of singer/songwriter/guitarist Stephen Mayone, guitarist Jonas Kahn, bassist Brian Karp, and drummer/singer/songwriter/producer Daniel Cantor. Mayone worked with the environmental education group Earthtunes; Cantor is an award-winning composer of scores for film, theater and multimedia projects, and has worked with groups like Aerosmith, Tracy Bonham, and the Epitones as a producer. The pair hooked up with Kahn (who also works as a photographer in Boston's music scene) and Karp (who has also played with Violet Tide, Letters to Cleo, and the Laurie Geltman Band) and recorded their debut album Premium soon after. Consistent gigging at the Middle East, the Bitter End, and other local venues earned the band a strong local following and critical acclaim, including a nomination for 1999's Debut Album Of The Year (Indie Label) at the Boston Music Awards.
