Not to be confused with the singer of the same name, Howard Johnson is a producer, arranger, and songwriter whose specialty in the '90s was overweight crooners with crow's feet around their eyes. On productions such as Lead and How to Swing With It by Tom Jones, the overweight aspect even seems to be strongly hinted at in the album title, a detail that enthused producer Johnson to the point where he just had to sing along, a move that garnered him one of those all-important credits for background singing.

Of more importance in terms of spawning checks in mailboxes is Johnson's credit as one of the authors of "Put Me in Your Mix" with Barry White. This opus, in which it takes White more than seven minutes to say what could easily be printed on one face of a greeting card, was the title track of a 1991 White release.
