A swing-era saxophonist, Williams led his own bands around New York and worked with, among others, Lucky Millinder's Mills Blue Rhythm Band, Jelly Roll Morton, Don Redman, Ella Fitzgerald, Henry "Red" Allen, James P. Johnson, and Garvin Bushell during the '30s and '40s. He also played in Europe while serving in the military in the years immediately following World War II.
