When dance music's popularity suddenly broke outside of the U.K. and spread to the States in the late '90s, DJ Garfield packed his bags and traded Nottingham, England, for South Beach, FL. In England, Garfield had attained a substantial level of success beginning in 1996 with his duties as resident DJ at Essance, a superclub in Nottingham that he also helped manage. Thanks to Essance, Garfield became one of the U.K.'s more recognized DJs, though his international reputation was still lacking. In winter 1998, he decided to change that, leaving the U.K. behind and moving to Miami Beach. There, he established himself as a prominent attraction at the club Liquid. At the time, DJs like Sasha and Digweed were major draws in Florida and Garfield followed their lead, focusing on progressive dance music, with an emphasis on the trance sound. His first nationally distributed mix album, Garfield Signatures, came in 2001.
