b. c.1895, probably Mississippi, USA, d. USA. An early blues guitarist, for a while Bankston lived around Dockery Plantation, Mississippi, as did fellow bluesmen Willie Brown and Charley Patton. Among blues musicians he is believed to have influenced is Tommy Johnson who was in his turn an influence upon the legendary Robert Johnson. Almost nothing is known of Bankston’s life and career and his reputation depends heavily upon passing comments made by better known and more intensely researched musicians such as Patton.
