One sign that the name David Nelson is extremely common is the fact that a panic ensued in 2004 when the Homeland Security Department put everyone named David Nelson on a computerized "do not allow to fly" list. Journalists named David Nelson skipped writing about this debacle; they were apparently too busy writing about music -- in the case of one particular David Nelson make that writing about the blues. A former editor of the superb Living Blues magazine, Nelson has also conducted research and assisted in the creation of a blues archive at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
He is a native of Chapel Hill, NC, where his college studies included creative writing. This locale is also a hotbed of interest in a wide range of musical styles, among them traditional American forms such as blues. Nelson developed a passion for Mississippi Delta blues, came in contact with performers in the genre, and decided to pursue graduate studies at Ole Miss. He began editing Living Blues in 1992; during his tenure the publication nearly doubled in size. He should not be confused with David K. Nelson, who writes about classical music.
