b. England. Alto saxophonist and keyboard player, Bowden made an impressive mark on the late 90s-early 00s UK jazz scene with his roaring large ensembles. Highly energized with a funk power base, Bowden’s composing and playing, allied as it is to a strikingly dramatic style of presentation, made huge inroads into the audience occupying the territory between jazz and post-rock contemporary music. His charts create a full orchestral sound that seamlessly blends horn and string ensembles with a small jazz combo. The overall effect has been compared favourably to the work of Gil Evans, updated to accommodate the contemporary jazz and dance scenes.
