Comprising Robbie Awork (vocals), Stewart Boyle (guitar), Michael Cusick (bass), Steve Barney (drums) and Dave Goldring (percussion), Bullyrag formed in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, in January 1995. Their blend of hip-hop and ragga-tinged hard rock found an immediate audience when their first demo was aired on BBC Radio 1, as well as London radio stations GLR and XFM. Within six weeks of formation and after only one live performance (supporting Big Audio Dynamite) Bullyrag were offered a major recording contract, but turned it down in order to give their songwriting time to develop. The offer, with a proposed advance of £250, 000, was made by Chris Blackwell of Island Records, who flew the band to Miami with the intention of signing them. They released the Verdoosh EP in March 1995, preceding a number of renewed offers from major label A&R executives. They eventually signed with Vertigo Records.
