b. Melbourne, Australia. In his childhood, McAll was exposed to all forms of jazz. His father was a traditional jazz lover, while elder brother John introduced him to more recent and contemporary artists such as Bud Powell and Bill Evans. McAll played in the Melbourne jazz scene in the mid-80s and in 1986 was chosen as pianist for Vince Jones. He was featured on the subsequent Jones albums, It All Ends Up In Tears (1987) and Trustworthy Little Sweethearts (1988). In 1989 McAll worked with American alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, who encouraged him to write more original compositions. A year later McAll won the inaugural AMP Jazz Piano Award at the Wangaratta Festival Of Jazz and he spent the prize money travelling to New York, USA, to study and perform.
