AllMusic Review by

Following up his excellent Zambia Roadside compilation, globe-trekking producer Michael Baird offers up a second round of vibrant field recordings made during several different trips through the south-central African country between 1996 and 2010. These rich representations of African folk were recorded in small towns and villages and often deep in the bush of a diverse country that speaks over 70 languages. From the warm vocal ensemble of the Mansa Visual Art Band to the hypnotic twang of Enock Mbongwe Haciwa's single-string kalumbu, there is a wide range of styles covered here. The drumming is particularly enchanting as is the silimba, a sort of primitive 10-note xylophone. Fans of Baird's first Zambian collection and of deep African folk in general will want to give this collection some attention.
