Yusef's Bag Review

by Scott Yanow

Four different sessions are represented on this out-of-print two-LP set. The first half is actually a date originally led by Doug Watkins (doubling on bass and cello) that features Yusef Lateef (on flute, oboe and tenor) and was reissued under Lateef's name. There are also selections from three of Lateef's New Jazz dates but the fact that the latter are not complete make this otherwise rewarding package less than essential. There are some strong highlights including versions of "I Remember You," "Imagination," "I'm Confessin '," Lateef's "Soulnik," "When You're Smiling" and "You've Changed"; the other musicians include flugelhornist Wilbur Harden, trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer (who although left off of the personnel listing is on the October 16, 1959 date), pianists Hugh Lawson and Barry Harris and drummer Elvin Jones. All of this music has since been reissued on CD.
