The Juan Maclean's second 12" is a great slice of plastic disco -- shiny, bold, and sleazy all at once. The mid-tempo A-side, "You Can't Have It Both Ways," confidently winds its hips with drum programming and eerie synth melodies informed by your favorite floor-friendly new wavers of yore. Meanwhile, Nancy Whang's seductive, slightly detached vocals carry on about who cares what and an overdubbed crowd cheers on the act (the run-out groove reads "Live at Warsaw, April 26, 2002"). The somber "My Time Is Running Out" isn't quite as exciting and isn't conducive to dancing in the least. A murky, murmuring synth line occasionally peeks out on top of a choppy, sedentary machine rhythm. This song would probably come to life in the context of a full-length album, but on its own, it just kind of exists and nothing more.
