YOU BELONG TO MY HEART is a 2002 collection of vintage pre-rock standards by one of the more underrated pop crooners, Engelbert Humperdinck. A British veteran of the easy listening circuit better known in many circles for his daft stage name (the original Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer of light opera) and the imposing moustache he sported in his lover-man days on the hit parade, Humperdinck in fact has an impressive baritone. A certain brassiness is endemic to singers from the same stylistic time and place as Humperdinck (Shirley Bassey comes immediately to mind), but instead of Robert Goulet's bombast, Humperdinck has a light, almost jazzy quality to his vocal style that often recalls Dean Martin. Highlights include a stirring "Red Sails in the Sunset."
