AllMusic Review by

Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith released two fantastic double-disc sets with their great Yo Miles! band (Upriver and Sky Garden) that, unfortunately, went out of print far too quickly. So Smith decided to take all the originals (that is to say, the non-Miles-penned tunes) from those albums and re-release them with some previously unreleased live material. The results are the digital-only Yo Miles: Lightning and Yo Miles: Shinjuku albums. Lightning takes "Thunder and Lightning" and "Macero" from Upriver and "Cozy Pete" from Sky Garden and adds three live tracks: "Miles Dewey Davis III: Great Ancestor" (studio version on the first Yo Miles! album), and two previously unreleased compositions, "Still Sunrise" and "Tsapiky Frelimo" (which features the Rova Saxophone Quartet). If you missed out the first time or just want to finally hear some live tracks from this band, here's your chance.
