Mika Vainio is half of Finland's popular Pan Sonic project. His infrequent solo recordings curtail the deviant slaughterhouse techno inclinations of Pan Sonic, but the essential matter--chilly electronic noise generated with home-built analog devices--remains the same. YDIN opens with "Energia," an endurance test for virgin ears unacquainted with the subtle pleasures inherent in electric discharge. It's nine minutes of irritating, wavering razor buzz to some--a riveting etude in ohms and arcs to others. Whether you're of the latter disposition or not, most of YDIN's subsequent tracks are certain to enthrall. Vaino offers closely observed bass waves and near-ambient frequency contouring, tames spitting voltage into swells of hypnotic, march-like rhythm ("Konsti"), and maps desolate but eerily beautiful ice-bound landscapes ("Kadonnut," "Vain," "Vaihtuja," "Ydin"). A rewarding expedition, splendidly packaged and presented.
