Around the time of their first releases, USA were frequently and deservedly lauded for picking up where early Pavement releases like Slanted and Enchanted left off. Ybissai Baby, the band's first EP, demonstrates the tricky nature of this comparison -- while the band's loose, reckless and thoroughly original sound may recall tracks like "Summer Babe," its general presentation differs in many ways. Ybissai Baby is a phenomenal collection of slanted, jangling indie rock, taking all of the genres most worthwhile pop influences and winding up with something fairly unique -- off-kilter song constructions, excellent melodies and that loose charm that invites Pavement comparisons combine to make an incredibly solid and highly promising record.
