Considering that a 1993 release by this young salsa performer was entitled CARA DE NINO ("Baby Face"), it is not surprising to see Rivera declaring his coming of age four years later. Released in 1997, YA NO SOY EL NINO AQUEL ("I Am Not a Kid Anymore") opens with a symbolic title track, a spicy Cucco Pena guaracha where the syncopated percussion and a jazzy piano evoke a musical maturity unseen in previous Rivera efforts.
Elsewhere, Rivera continues to defend his new, adult nature with a vengeance. "Yo Quisiera Ser el Condor" opens with sinuous percussion and travels to the Andes for musical inspiration. And "Amor de Fotografia" has the casually erotic tempo of a song by the smoothest of salsa romantica performers. Maturity, however, doesn't necessarily signify a lack of energy, as the frantic chorus of "Nena" clearly demonstrates.
