"World Around," the first single from Levitation's Need for Not, suggests nothing so much as the Red Hot Chili Peppers gone shoegazer. At the risk of stating the obvious, this is not a good thing. Between the machine-gun guitar riffing, pummeling drums and Terry Bickers' faux-rap vocals, you'd swear it's all just a joke were it not the first major-label single from a largely unknown band, not typically the platform for such hijinks. The B-sides are far better--though no masterpiece, the instrumental "Jay" makes you wish Bickers would just shut up all the time, while the closing "Usher" manages to evoke past glories via his and Christian Hayes' bombastic guitars and Dave Francolini's tribal drumming.
