AllMusic Review by

Primarily comprised of vocalist Ahman, guitarist Dave Knott, and multi-instrumentalists Mike Hovancsek and Michael Fowler, the DPEs created a unique blend of blues, folk, and 20th century avant-garde. Syrian vocalist Ahman sings in Arabic over traditional American blues licks. Hovancsek sings under water on "Liquid Blues." Guest appearances by Amy Denio and Paul Guerguerian add a nice touch as well, notably on "Ukuyuku" and "Opening Drone." In places brilliant, in other places very sloppy and amateurish, this uneven recording offers as good a recording as is possible after the group was forcibly disbanded. A pleasant cover of the Velvet Underground's "Waiting for the Man" in the middle of the recording degenerates into sheer, raw noise. And the record closes with a counterpart to "Opening Drone with a closing drone called "First Day in Berlin," featuring lyrics by Mike Batt.
