Most people think of Van Ronk as a folk singer, and that is the community he has been most a part of, but he has always thought of himself as a jazz singer. On this album from his early career he shows why. Van Ronk offers up exuberant performances of "Cake Walkin Babies from Home" and "Ace in the Hole." There are some solo guitar songs such as Son House's "Death Letter Blues," and even a Bob Dylan tune, "If I Had to Do It All over Again, I'd Do It All over You." These days this record, as well as his others which have not made the jump to CD, is hard to find; but well worth picking up if found in some unsuspecting record bin.
