There was a period when tenor saxophonist Jesper Thilo's playing resembled Zoot Sims, but by the time of this 1991 CD, his hard-swinging style sounded quite original. Teamed up with pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Doug Raney, bassist Hugo Rasmussen, and drummer Svend-Erik Norregaard, Thilo sounds in enthusiastic form on eight jazz standards, plus Kenny Dorham's "Prince Albert" and Raney's "Jazz on a Par." The music falls between bop and swing, which is perfect for Jones' style, swinging but fairly modern. One of the better Jesper Thilo releases, this set is easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans.
