This promotional sampler contains tracks from 11 albums released by the Verve Music Group -- Verve, GRP, Blue Thumb, and Impulse! -- during the winter of 1999-2000. It's a varied collection, ranging from established talents such as John Scofield, Michael Brecker, and Al Jarreau (previewing his label debut) to relative newcomers like Kurt Rosenwinkel. Guitarists such as Scofield, Pat Metheny (supporting Brecker), and Rosenwinkel lead things off, with vocalists such as Terry Callier, Jarreau, and Dee Dee Bridgewater coming near the end. Marc Antoine, another guitarist, seems particularly promising. From the Meters-like funk of Scofield's "Blackout" to Bridgewater's radical restatement of "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" (which won't make you forget Billie Holiday, but will make you sit up and take notice), the companies' current rosters seem strong.
