Sounding derivative yet fresh and breathing new life into the tired old blues-rock power trio concept is no small feat for three kids from the Canadian heartland. Yet that's exactly what these three high school buds managed to do on their impressive big-label debut. Drummer Safwan Javed lays down a nervous pulse a la Mick Fleetwood, and the band gets your toe tapping with "Midnight Rain," athe first single. Guitarist Shaun Verreault quotes from "Red House" to open "All It Amounts To," an obvious tip of the hat to Jimi Hendrix. Opening track "My Old Self" is a dead ringer for Golden Earring, and "Mary Mary" invokes the spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan. While the band's influences are plain, all the tunes are originals. Verreault comes to Javed and bassist Earl Pereira with a sketch of a song, then they polish it together. This is great driving music, ready made for airplay.
