The trio known as Unitone Hifi takes the dub sound system beyond its deejay origins, yet farther away from more modernist practitioners such as Adrian Sherwood and his On-U posse. Here it incorporates a sizeable chunk of digital sampling, oozing electronics and twisted rhythm programming into its own brand of post-modern dub.
"Unitone Hifi" labors in the shadow of King Tubby, but is also laced with an acrylic, digitized sheen, bass drums bouncing off shiny microchip surfaces. "Lucky Lighters" uses shuffle beats to waltz across its funky dub soundscape, dripping with studio FX and other mixing desk gimmickry. This is dub like you've never heard it before, earmarked for the new millennium, somewhere between hardcore and hard drive, making for a consistently mindbending trip through the severest regions of reverb.
