It's hard to believe it's been nearly half a century since "Rock Around the Clock," "At the Hop," and "Johnny B. Goode" swept into the public's imagination, and even harder to fathom is the continuing appeal to generation after generation. But you can't deny that these songs are an enduring part of the American landscape. Hence, this spirited if not brilliantly original collection of instrumental versions of songs you know by heart. The hits are all played by gifted studio musicians, most notably saxophonist Mike Nelson, who breathes exciting life into "Jailhouse Rock," "Runaround Sue," and "Why Do Fools Fall in Love." Not to mention "Tequila." Replacing the lead vocal on "Johnny B. Goode" is an interesting touch. That's actually part of the fun here -- enjoying the song you know well and seeing how producer Daniel Summer decides to substitute for the singer. Other tunes taken from the world of Happy Days include "Blueberry Hill," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," "Runaway," and "Rockin' Robin." Perfect party music for your next sock hop.
