This debut by Little Red Rocket (who was based in their hometown of Birmingham, AL, when this album was recorded) mines much of the territory that better bands like Belly, Lush, and Elastica (to name three) had already mined, and while fans of these groups will no doubt enjoy hearing the lush, graceful voices of the two talented frontwomen (who both take turns at lead guitar and vocal duties), their plain vanilla-tasting alt-pop formula fails to add much to this familiar genre. There's a wide range of styles put forth on Who Did You Pay, including inspired slide guitar ("New Country"), fuzzed-out power chords ("I'm a Fake"), and Orenda Fink has a lovely voice that may remind some of the Pale Saints' Meriel Barham, as does her co-lead Maria Taylor (check out their vocals on "Wheels and Weather," the plaintive, haunting "Silver Girl," or the saggy "Maybe"), but there's nothing much here that will sound too original if you've heard the aforementioned bands already.
