A fixture in Los Angeles jazz clubs throughout the 1980s and '90s, tenor saxophonist Benn Clatworthy has recorded surprisingly little. This CD from his own private label gives one a strong sampling of his talents; the supporting cast includes pianist Cedar Walton (on three of the nine tunes), guitarist Rick Zunigar, either Larry Gales or Darek Oles on bass, and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Clatworthy's style is influenced by John Coltrane (circa 1959), but his tone has gradually become softer and more original. Highlights include a duet version of "My Ship" with Walton, "Blue Room," a rare revival of "While My Lady Sleeps," and several of the tenor's originals.
