The trio of bassist Dieter Ilg, pianist Marc Copland, and drummer Jeff Hirshfield performs a wide range of material on this set and is particularly rewarding on ballads. The musicians dig into "Young and Foolish" and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" with sensitivity and, although the music has been reharmonized and updated to an extent, they are quite respectful to the mood and original melody. A couple other pieces are a bit funky (including a creative reworking of "What's Going On"), but none of the music is predictable. Ilg has nearly as much solo space as Copland, but it is the communication between the players and the ensemble sound that are most impressive. This set is well worth exploring.
