Susan Skoog appears to have thought just as long and hard about her soundtrack to Whatever, an astute '80s coming of age drama, as she did on her film. It's a nice overview of what the arty/smarty/disenfranchised kids of the era were listening to (Patti Smith, Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees) as well as the regular Joes ("Tom Sawyer" by Rush). The '90s Aimee Mann's "I Should Have Known" serves as a nice coda; it sums up the movie while hearkening back to the affecting opening track by the very '80s diva Chrissie Hynde.
