Western Swing on the Radio is a 20-song compilation of Western Swing from the '30s, '40s and '50s, including terrific cuts from bandleaders like Bob Wills, Wesley Tuttle, Hank Thompson, Leon McAuliffe, Tex Williams, and Cecil Brower. What makes the compilation quite interesting, for both casual fans and collectors, is how it spotlights lesser-known artists, not just the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills. In doing so, it provides an excellent service, demonstrating the richness of the music, as well as its surprising variety. Since Western Swing on the Radio is comprised largely of radio transcriptions, it isn't necessarily an essential item, yet it remains a terrific, low-key way of exploring one of the most popular genres in country music.
