West Coast Jive Review

by Scott Yanow

This Delmark CD features music recorded in Los Angeles during 1945-46 that puts the focus on its colorful vocals yet is generally pretty jazz-oriented. Wynonie Harris shouts out three numbers, Duke Henderson is backed by such musicians as tenors Lucky Thompson and Wild Bill Moore in addition to bassist Charles Mingus, the barely documented Cee Pee Johnson Band is heard on six songs and there are features for the obscure Al "Stomp" Russell Trio and singer Frank Haywood. None of the music is really all that essential but these often jivey performances are quite accessible and fun.
