Keyboardist Marc Rossi's quintet (which includes guitarist Bruce Arnold, the reeds of Lance Van Lenten, electric bassist Bill Urmson and drummer Ed Uribe) shows throughout this 1997 release (which was recorded back in 1988) that there is still life to be found in fusion. Rossi, who has played with Jimmy Giuffre and George Russell, contributed eight originals which, while complex, always contain some catchy melodies. Avoiding the overemphasis on chops that sometimes plagued mid-'70s records, Rossi leaves plenty of solo space for guitarist Arnold, the talented if obscure saxophonist Van Lenten and his own keyboards. Even with the consistent evolution of electric keyboards during the following decade, the spirited music on Marc Rossi's set (which contains some chance-taking explorations) sounds fresh.
