Warp: Routine Review

by John Bush

A Warp label sampler designed to trumpet the new American offices of the perennial British electronics pioneer, Warp: Routine includes 15 selections of album tracks plus a previously vinyl-only song from Plaid and (trainspotters beware) a completely unreleased track from Autechre. Considering that Warp is well-known for the high quality of its releases, Warp: Routine really can't lose -- great tracks come from Two Lone Swordsmen ("Brootle"), Squarepusher ("Square Rave"), Boards of Canada ("In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country"), Nightmares on Wax (an edit of "Les Nuits"), and much-vaunted newcomer Prefuse73 ("Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives"). The rare Plaid contribution is the title track from the duo's "Booc" single, while the unreleased "Konlied Mx" is one of the least-processed additions to Autechre's discography (at times, a clarinet is easily distinguishable).
