Distilled from a cassette of the same name issued on the Chocolate Monk label, Walk Thru This World With...the Folk Implosion documents the earliest recorded pairings of the duo of Lou Barlow and John Davis. Far removed from the supple electro-pop of their left-field hit "Natural One," these 12 songs are primitive, two-chord rants and raves -- cymbals crash, guitars squeal, and voices join together to forge some of the most tuneless harmonies imaginable. A pair of snide covers -- Nirvana's "School" and Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down," respectively -- come closest to resembling actual songs, but it's worth hearing regardless for the simple reason that few records convey the sheer joy of collaboration and creation quite so articulately. These guys are having fun making noise -- which, the last time I checked, is what rock & roll is all about.
