This LP features the Lionel Hampton big band in 1954 playing some consistently rousing (and occasionally hysterical) music. These live performances include three standards and a trio of fairly basic originals played with plenty of spirit and color if not a great deal of subtlety. It is easy to tell from this LP why Hampton's orchestra continued to be quite popular in an era when big bands were becoming quite rare; his performances mixed together the excitement of R&B and early rock & roll with fine jazz solos.
