Sony's Wagner at the Met is a 25-CD box set of remastered recordings of historic radio broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, appearing on CD for the first time. Included are performances of Die Götterdämmerung (1936), Siegfried (1937), Tristan und Isolde (1938), Lohengrin (1943), Die Walküre (1943), Der fliegende Holländer (1950), Das Rheingold (1951), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1953), and Tannhäuser (1954), featuring such famed Wagnerian voices as Lauritz Melchior, Kirsten Flagstad, Hans Hotter, Astrid Varnay, Jerome Hines, and Brian Sullivan, among others. Thanks to the restoration of these recordings, their singing is vibrant and full of presence, despite the unavoidable recording flaws that couldn't be removed digitally. Wagner's music dramas are conducted by equally legendary maestros, Fritz Reiner, George Szell, Erich Leinsdorf, and noted Wagner specialist, Artur Bodanzky. This and a similar set, Verdi at the Met, were released in 2013 to mark these composers' 200th birthday celebrations.
