AllMusic Review by

All of bassist/composer Spike Hughes' British recordings of 1930-32 have been reissued on two double-CDs by the English Kings Cross label. Although the first set gets a slight edge, both volumes should greatly interest early jazz collectors for they show that there was quite a bit of jazz talent in England during the early years of the Depression. The 41 numbers on Vols. 3 & 4 are essentially jazz-influenced dance music but there are plenty of hot solos along with some indifferent vocals. Well worth searching for.
