Like a lot of non-American bands with American sounds, the Swedish group Carpet People strike right to the center of what's appealing about American indie bands like Sebadoh or Portastatic -- Volley U Make combines strangled vocals, American-indierock guitar work, and certain elements of spaciness. Something about the band's slightly idiosyncratic sound makes them seem much better than a lot of Americans doing similar things. Assemble and Plug, the album and EP package for international audiences which followed, is far more crafted and dynamic, and is certainly a more notable release for the band, yet Volley U Make is a very solid album in its own right.
