Ralph Peterson's drumming is as consistently explosive as Art Blakey's, making it very difficult for soloists to relax or goof off; otherwise he'll bury them. On this heated CD he gathered an all-star crew of young greats: trumpeter Terence Blanchard, Steve Wilson on alto and soprano, pianist Geri Allen and bassist Phil Bowler. The solos throughout the high-powered session are concise, telling a quick story, and even the ballads "On My Side" and "The Benevolent One" are stormy. Peterson's sidemen are up to the challenge, making this a superior example of music that is both post-bop and swinging jazz.
